When the days turn cold and wintry, there is nothing nicer than making one's home even cosier and 'warmer' with accessories, blankets, trinkets and, why not, candles and diffusers.

The latter are objects that not only make rooms more pleasant and fragrant, but can also furnish and add a personal and original touch to them.

Moreover, scents are linked to memory and aromatherapy can have beneficial effects on good mood. Therefore, it is not surprising that a candle or diffuser with a certain smell can generate relax and positive feelings.

The important thing is to choose them carefully and, above all, to know where to place them and how best to use them!

Scented candles: where to place them at home

If you prefer candles with a warm scent, we suggest you put them in the living room.

This is because the living area is where we spend most of our time and it is also where it is important that the smells are pleasant and always pleasant.

Moreover, warm aromas, such as cinnamon, cloves, amber, chocolate, sandalwood, cloves and star anise, generate relaxation and wellbeing, but are also able to stimulate and instil energy, giving those who smell them great positivity, optimism and enthusiasm.

If, on the other hand, you prefer candles with floral or fresh aromas, we recommend placing them in the bedroom or bathroom: two places where rest is a must and where you seek refreshment after a long day.

Lavender, for example, is great for chilling out. Rose fragrances help to restore calm and let go of worries. Jasmine soothes headaches and promotes sleep. Eucalyptus encourages good breathing and vanilla (which straddles the line between warm and floral candles) calms the nervous system.

In the living room, you can place your favourite candles on the coffee table or any other low table or ledge. However, be sure to avoid flammable objects and materials. Also try to place them at a good distance from the rest of the furniture and, especially, from paper materials (such as books).

In the bedroom or bathroom, the same rules apply: it is best to reserve candles for specific locations, away from curtains, fabrics and flammable objects.

In larger rooms, you can place two candles in different positions. If you prefer to play it safe, you can select candles with similar fragrances, which are easy to coordinate, but if you like to be daring, you can also combine heterogeneous fragrances.

Perfumers: where to place them in the home

Fragrance diffusers allow a scented liquid to slowly evaporate. This process gradually fills rooms with whatever fragrance is contained in the liquid.

The fluid used in diffusers or perfumers usually consists of essential oils in an inert base, often water. This liquid can be diffused by means of bundles of reeds inserted into it or through an electrical system.

The choice, between reeds and electronic bases, depends purely on personal taste and the type of effect one wants to achieve: 'traditional' diffusers are often small and also play a decorative role, the latter last longer and better meet the needs of those who believe strongly in the benefits of aromatherapy.

Unlike candles, which must be placed away from any flammable or delicate objects, diffusers can be placed wherever you prefer.

However, since their characteristic is precisely that of diffusing aromas in an almost continuous manner, the advice is to place the scent diffusers in a strategic point of the room, i.e. in the corners or on a raised level with respect to the rest of the room, so that the fragrances can be distributed in the best possible way, without being too intrusive.

In addition, it is advisable not to exaggerate with diffusers and to choose a quality one, rather than many 'cheaper' ones: it is essential that the fragrances are of excellent workmanship, as are the materials in which they are contained.

Using candles at home: tips for use

As beautiful, pleasant and characteristic as they undoubtedly are, candles are still accessories that must be handled with care. Here are some basic tips on how to safely use candles in your home:

  • For optimal combustion, cut the wick to 3 mm before each ignition to avoid smoke and overheating;
  • always protect the surface on which the candle rests;
  • The first burn of any candle should be long enough to allow the entire top layer of wax to liquefy. This will ensure an even burn for each light;
  • refrain from burning candles for more than 3 hours at a time and never burn a candle when there is less than 1 cm of wax at the base;
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended or within reach of drafts, pets or small children;
  • the candle container will be hot after being burnt, so let the wax cool completely before handling it;
  • once the flame has extinguished, ensure that the wick is upright and centred;
  • extinguish the flame carefully by dampening it rather than blowing on it.
